In September 2023, Karlee’s world flipped upside down when she was playing in a varsity soccer game at Littlestown High School where she planted, twisted and heard a pop in her left knee. The immediate panic set in as she realized something was seriously wrong, and her soccer season was over.
She quickly got an appointment with one of our well-respected orthopedic surgeons, Dr. Matthew Posner. The diagnosis was confirmed: Karlee had torn her left ACL. The news was a crushing blow, and the surgery that followed a month later only added to her mental and emotional turmoil. Karlee found herself in a deep depressive state, feeling lost and unsure if she would ever be able to play soccer again. This mental struggle set her recovery back significantly.
Determined to help Karlee not just physically but also emotionally and mentally, her WellSpan athletic trainer, Alivia, worked tirelessly to support her. “We celebrated every small victory, no matter how insignificant it seemed. We had more recovery days, and on some of those days, Karlee brought her puppy, Gunner, to the sessions. Gunner’s presence brought a sense of comfort and joy, which was crucial in lifting her spirits,” said Alivia.

As the weeks turned into months, Karlee began to realize that she was behind in her recovery. Instead of letting this realization defeat her, she saw it as a new challenge to overcome. She committed to working harder, often putting in four to five sessions a week. Her dedication was unwavering, and before we knew it, Karlee had caught up and was entering the final phase of her recovery in April.
Karlee’s strength, commitment and perseverance were truly remarkable. She faced adversity head-on and refused to let it define her. Watching her transform from a defeated athlete to a determined and resilient one was incredibly inspiring. Her medical team, including Dr. Posner and Alivia, were in awe of her progress and the positive attitude she maintained throughout.
In her sophomore soccer season, Karlee returned to the field with a vengeance. She started the majority of the varsity games and was back to being the ruthless defender she had always been. Her presence on the team brought more wins, and she made significant strides in her soccer career.
Karlee’s story is a powerful reminder that with the right support and an unbreakable spirit, anything is possible. Congratulations, Karlee, on your incredible journey and your return to the sport you love!
