Many of the interns are able to complete their requirements at a satellite facility in Lebanon, Lancaster, or York county, depending on the type opportunity sought.

Our internships range from vocation/technical to highest degreed professionals, including internships in information technology, medical coding, medical billing, health information management and behavioral health.

At any given time, WellSpan Philhaven has between thirty to thirty-five interns engaged with us in learning. Each intern is assigned an experienced supervisor to assist in coaching and mentoring learning activity. Interns whose program requires more than one hundred hours are provided a general orientation and specific training in crisis intervention. Our interns get real exposure to the work environment at WellSpan Philhaven and give us feedback that they found the internship to be extraordinarily beneficial.

WellSpan Philhaven interns are strongly encouraged to apply for open positions within the organization after completing their degree programs. We are frequently able to hire individuals who have completed an internship with us.

Program: Adult Day Hospital
Location: Mt. Gretna
Hours: Day (generally 8am-4pm)

Description

Clients in the Day Hospital Program can attend up to 6 hours per day, 5 days per week, Monday through Friday. Clients in the Intensive Outpatient Track attend for 3.5 hours per day, and generally attend 3-5 days per week, Monday through Friday.

Population

Adults ages 18 and up. Depression, Anxiety, Bipolar, Schizoaffective and some Axis II Disorders.

Program's therapeutic approach

The structured Day Hospital/Intensive Outpatient Program is designed to deliver a high volume of therapeutic intervention in a relatively short period of time. Services include a psychiatric evaluation, medication management, therapeutic groups, individual and family counseling.

Internships

1 Bachelor Level Internship

The intern will be required to:

  • Co-lead and facilitate groups (coping skills, group therapy, self awareness)
  • Become familiar with treatment plans and goals for the clients
  • Understand and learn correct documentation standards
  • Understand and comply with HIPAA and safety issues for clients

Description

24 Hour Program with shifts running from 7:00AM-3:30PM, 3:00PM-11:30PM, and 11:00PM - 7:30AM. Intern hours are typically scheduled around the day and early evening shift hours Monday through Friday to maximize on clinical support available.

Population

Children's unit consists of children ages 4-11 and Adolescent Unit consists of adolescents ages 12 -18 with at times younger adults ages 18-21. Each child/adolescent will have a mental health diagnosis, most commonly: ADHD, ODD, PTSD, Anxiety, Depression, and higher functioning ASD. Diagnosis can also include Schizophrenic and Schizo-effective and some personality disorders.

Program's therapeutic approach

Groups are done throughout the shifts on both units. Groups are done according to age and level of functioning to provide psycho-educational teaching, skill building, social skills practice and process/support for the clients.

Description

The program hours during the school year are 12:00 PM to 8:00 PM Monday through Friday, with the children in programing from 3:30PM to 7:30 PM. In the summer the program starts 2-3 hours earlier and ends earlier.

Population

School age children from 6 –18 years of age. Each child will have a mental health diagnosis, most commonly ADHD, ODD, PTSD, Anxiety, Depression, and higher functioning ASD. Diagnosis can also include Schizophrenic and Schizo-effective and some personality disorders.

Program's therapeutic approach

Two to three groups are developed according to age and level of functioning to provide psycho-educational teaching, skill building, social skills practice, and process/support for the clients.

Internships

Appropriate for C/A After-school Program: - Primarily Bachelor level internships of at least 100 hours or more. - One Master’s level intern if an LSW is an appropriate level of supervision for the intern.

The intern will be required to:

  • Become familiar with treatment plans and goals for the clients

Description

The purpose of the program is to help youth improve their social, emotional, and behavioral functioning in the home, school and community settings by providing a routine of peer interaction, therapeutic activities, and individualized goal-setting. Staff Hours: 1:00PM-9:00PM (during school year); 10:30AM-6:30PM (during summer) Client hours: 4:00PM-7:45PM (during school year); 12:00PM-5:00PM (during summer)

Population

Services are provided to youth between the ages of 5 - 14 years old, who have a mental health diagnosis. The program is unable to serve youth if they display certain difficulties, such as persistent danger of hurting themselves or others, or if they have active use of dependence on alcohol or drugs. Common diagnosis include ADHD, ODD, Anxiety Disorders, and Autism Spectrum Disorder. Clients must be able to participate in group settings.

Program's therapeutic approach

The After-School Program is designed as a structured treatment program that provides evidenced-based therapeutic activities, individual goals and assignments, and group therapy. Clients may need improvement in areas such as anger management, coping skills, impulse control, problem solving, self-esteem, feeling identification, decision making, emotional regulation, social interaction, and creative expression. Additional therapeutic components may focus on recreation, assistance with homework, community outings and family outreach.

Internships

5 + Bachelor's level internships of 100 hours or more. Primary hours need to overlap client hours.

The intern will be required to:

  • Case management
  • Practicing behavior management techniques through client interaction
  • Leading therapeutic and skill groups
  • Case management responsibilities include: assisting with filing and managing client charts; learning about funding and authorization; observing the process of completing client assessment and documentation. Supervised client interactions include, but are not limited to: assisting with behavioral interventions, implementing the program reward system/token economy; giving individualized attention to a child who needs support with their goal. Finally, planning and implementing therapeutic group activities. The following are common groups: goals group, relaxation group, coping skills group, social skill development group, feelings group, and other therapeutic skill groups
  • Become familiar with the client's chart, treatment plan, and goals

The goal of the day program is to provide short term stabilization and treatment services for children and adolescents in the community who are experiencing acute distress. The program allows youth to maintain integration and involvement in the community. The program provides group therapy, psychiatric supervision and medication management, ed therapy, case management, family engagement and individual therapeutic contacts. The program runs year round 8:30AM - 2:30PM Monday through Friday.

Population

Children from 5 - 19 years of age. Each child will have a mental health diagnosis, most commonly: ADHD, ODD, PTSD, Anxiety, Depression, and higher functioning Autism Spectrum Disorders.

Program's therapeutic approach

Daily groups are developed according to age and level of funtioning to provide-educational teaching, increase skills for anger management, feelings expression, coping skills for depression and anxiety, social skills practice and process/support for the clients.

Description

The goal of Lebanon County Crisis Intervention and Referral Services is to provide Lebanon County with prompt clinical assessment, intervention and referral services for individuals experiencing acute symptoms related to mental illness or emotional distress. These crisis intervention services are available twenty-four hours per day, seven days per-week. Mental health workers are expected to provide these services in a manner that is respectful of the individual’s ethnic, sexual, religious, socioeconomic and cultural background. With the consent of the persons served, crisis intervention staff may facilitate the involvement of significant others and family members in the process of resolving the immediate crisis of a client. When indicated, crisis intervention initiates a crisis intervention safety plan and/or may refer the individual to the appropriate level of care. Such levels of care may include community support services, support groups, outpatient therapy, day hospitalization or participation in inpatient psychiatric hospitalization or drug and alcohol services. When necessary and clinically appropriate, crisis staff provides emergency mental health delegate services to ensure the safety of the individual referred for services as well as the safety of the community. The professional mental health workers of crisis intervention (commonly referred to as crisis counselors) provide assessment, counseling, outreach and information and referral services to individuals experiencing an emotional crisis or having difficulty coping with a personal problem. Crisis intervention services are designed to provide intervention which lessen or resolve precipitating stress, acute trauma or mental health emergencies. Crisis intervention counseling is a short term strategy that employs support and problem solving to assist a person in changing behavior patterns and return to a pre-crisis level of functioning. Crisis counselors meet with an individual in crisis either via phone, on-site within the community or within the Good Samaritan Hospital to conduct an in-depth, comprehensive assessment of his or her current problems, psychiatric history, substance abuse history, medical history and family issues. Based upon the initial assessment, recommendations will be made to the client and/or their family.

Population

Lebanon County Crisis Intervention and Referral Services provide assessment and crisis intervention to individuals within Lebanon County, Pennsylvania. Services are provided to all ages. All consumers served by crisis intervention have the right to receive services that are reasonable, cost efficient and consistent with the highest standards of professional mental health crisis services. Treatment is provide in a context that is sensitive to cultural and social diversity, the least restrictive and meeting the most immediate needs of the client at the time of crisis.

Program's therapeutic approach

Lebanon County Crisis Intervention and Referral Services provide walk-in counseling, individual mobile crisis services and telephone crisis services out of two locations within the county. The main office is located at 4th and Walnut Streets in Lebanon, Pennsylvania in the basement of the Good Samaritan Hospital. The second office is located at 283 South Butler Road in Mt. Gretna, Pennsylvania within Philhaven Hospital’s Access Center. Crisis intervention staff are on duty twenty-hour hours a day, seven days a week. Clients can also receive services by entering the local emergency rooms at the Good Samaritan Hospital or Lebanon Veterans Administration Hospital. Clients can also receive services by presenting in person to the main entrance at Philhaven Hospital.

4- Bachelor level Internships of at least 100 hours or more.

The intern will be required to:

  • Answering the crisis hotline and becoming familiar with services within Lebanon County
  • Understand and learn correct documentation standards

Description

This program focuses on restoring, reinforcing and facilitating adaptive growth and development in the patient, as well as, in their families. This is achieved through a structured day program which offers a wide range of therapeutic activities. The treatment components offer opportunities to patients and their families to work toward individualized psych educational, social and emotional goals. Therapeutic experiences target self-expression, self-awareness, self-control and esteem, building impulse control and self-control, stress management, problem solving and social rehabilitation. The overall goal of the program is to facilitate stabilization of acute behavioral and emotional disturbance for patients.

Population

The Child and Adolescent Day Hospital provides outpatient, nonresidential, intensive services 5 days per week to child aged clients; latency aged clients and adolescents (Kindergarten to 12th grade).

Program's therapeutic approach

Programming for each group is specifically designed to meet the developmental needs of that age group most appropriate to his or her developmental needs. The intensive treatment components offer therapy, structure and support while the multidisciplinary team creates and sustains a therapeutic environment that promotes social rehabilitation, emotional growth and adaptive coping strategies and skills.

Primarily Bachelor level internship of 100 hours or more. 2 Master's level internships if an LSW is an appropriate level of supervision for the intern.

Description

We prefer to have students for two semesters. Typically, interns work day shift from 8:00AM - 4:00PM, however, we have the ability to be flexible with the hours based on their work schedule or class schedule. We have had interns that worked noon to 8:00PM and others that have worked 3:00PM-11:00PM.

Population

Access interns will be working with counselors and clinicians completing intake assessments for inpatient and day hospital. Interns will complete Level of Care Exams, which is an assessment to determine what type of services a walk-in client needs for recovery. Interns will also have exposure to Crisis Intervention, shadow in the IP units, Extended Acute Unit and the PHP unit to see various levels of services Philhaven provides.

Program's therapeutic approach

Access and Triage are an assessment style unit. CBT and DBT types of treatment during interactions with clients may be used.

Internships

We are accepting 4+ students working on their Master's in Social Work, Counseling, Clinical Psychology or a related field. We prefer internships that are over 100 hours. However, we are able to accept an internship with 100 hours fall semester and 600 hours spring semester.

The intern will be required to:

  • Become familiar with the Electronic Medical Records System
  • Understand and learn correct documentation standards
  • Interview clients for admission to various levels of care
  • Complete assessments on clients to determine level of care needed
  • Understand and comply with HIPAA
  • Complete Philhaven orientation and complete Therapeutic Crisis Intervention class prior to starting internship (done during orientation)
  • Develop relationships with clients
  • Complete safety assessments and safety plans with clients
  • Complete suicide and homicide assessments on clients
  • Participate in group activities in different programs depending on the length of the internship

Description

The Adult Unit is an inpatient program for persons with acute psychiatric illness requiring stabilization and 24-hour supervision. Patients admitted have a diversity of diagnoses and presenting problems, many with co-occurring medical and drug and alcohol issues, some voluntarily admitted and others in the hospital by the way of an involuntary court commitment. Average length of stay is approximately 8-9 days with some patients being discharged after a day or two and others requiring protracted stays and referrals for long-term placement.

Population

Adults only

Program's therapeutic approach

The unit has an interdisciplinary team approach to treatment (psychiatry, nursing, activities therapy, psychotherapy, pastoral care, peer support) and a diversity of modalities for treatment (medication, individual and family therapy, groups).

Internships

Due to the complexity of the patient needs and the brief nature of the hospital stays, internships are open only to second year Master's student and only for internships, not practicums.

The intern will be required to:

  • Provision of individual and family therapy, development of safety plans.
  • Ability to document as a part of the electronic medical record.
  • Coordination with the clinical teams to assist with aftercare planning

Outpatient setting that offers a variety of services to people and their families on the autism spectrum. These services include: outpatient therapy, psychiatry, psychological evaluations and assessments, consultation, BHRS, group therapy.

2 Master's level, advanced 2nd year students who are able to be available for 2 semesters for 2 days per week

The intern will be required to:

  • Observe and participate in a multidisciplinary approach to care
  • Provide care to individuals and families in an outpatient setting including individual , group and family therapy
  • Participation in clinical meetings and educational trainings related to autism and ABA
  • Interns will be able to visit and learn about other Philhaven programs and community resources, observe clients in the community and become familiar with research related to ABA and autism.

Daily groups are developed according to age and level of functioning to provide-educational teaching, increase skills for anger management, feelings expression, coping skills for depression and anxiety, social skills practice and process/support for the clients.

Internships

Master's level internship, if an LPC is an appropriate level of supervision for the intern

The intern will be required to:

  • Become familiar with treatment plans and goals for the clients
  • Understand and learn correct documentation standards
  • Understand and comply with HIPAA and safety issues for clients
  • Develop relationships with clients
  • Assist staff in preparing each type of group and helping to present materials
  • Master's level interns will eventually carry his or her own cases from admission to discharge

Program: Child and Adolescent Day Hospital
Location: York
Hours: Day (generally 8am-4pm)
Degree: MA

Description

Clients in the day hospital program can attend up to 6 hours per day, 5 days per week, Monday through Friday. Clients in the intensive outpatient track attend for 3 hours per day, and generally attend 3-5 days per week, Monday through Friday.

Population

School age children from 5 to 18 years of age. Each client will have a mental health diagnosis, most commonly: ADHD, ODD, PTSD, anxiety, depression and high functioning ASD. Diagnosis can also include schizophrenic and schizo-effective, and some personality disorders.

Program's therapeutic approach

The structured day hospital/intensive outpatient program is designed to deliver a high volume of therapeutic intervention in a relatively short period of time. Services include a psychiatric evaluation, medication management, therapeutic groups, individual and family counseling, and educational therapy.

Internships

  • Assist staff in managing the milieu and providing support in the educational therapy setting
  • Longer term is primary in planning and executing an assigned group for the clients with the assistance of the staff
  • Master's level interns will perform all above responsibilities in addition to completing initial assessments, aiding in concurrent insurance reviews, and taking on an individual case load of at least one client
