Emergency Medicine ultrasound rotation
In addition to our standard emergency medicine elective rotation, we offer a specialized program in ultrasound for medical students in their fourth year of school.
This rotation will develop your skills and knowledge in ultrasound through an immersive learning experience. Our team of experienced emergency medicine and ultrasound fellowship-trained faculty members bring a wealth of knowledge and practical expertise to the program, ensuring that you receive top-quality education and mentorship.
Through hands-on training and didactic sessions, you’ll gain proficiency in various ultrasound applications, including FAST, cardiac, vascular, musculoskeletal and abdominal ultrasound.
Our faculty will guide you through practical sessions to help you refine your scanning skills and interpretation of ultrasound images. Our didactic sessions will cover the fundamental principles of ultrasound physics, image acquisition and interpretation.
You’ll also:
- attend weekly ultrasound conferences
- perform at least 50 ultrasound scans on patients during bedside scanning shifts
- participate in monthly Medical Student Ultrasound Days with dedicated lectures, workshops and hands-on sessions
- be invited to join weekly emergency medicine conferences
By the end of this rotation, you’ll have a strong foundation in emergency ultrasound, empowering you to make informed diagnostic decisions and provide high-quality patient care. Whether you plan to specialize in emergency medicine or pursue any other medical field, the skills and knowledge gained from this rotation will be valuable throughout your career.
The ultrasound rotation lasts four weeks and is available year-round.

Emergency Medicine toxicology rotation
Our medical staff of emergency medicine physicians includes several fellowship-trained medical toxicologists. Medical toxicologists care for patients who’ve experienced exposures to pharmaceutical or non-pharmaceutical medications or drugs, environmental exposures (plants, venoms, other elements) and other potentially hazardous material exposures.
Our toxicology rotation will allow you to learn more about these exposures, how to evaluate patients and management of care for those who need treatment.
Our rotation integrates pharmacology, pathophysiology and clinical medicine. You’ll engage in bedside consults to gain a well-rounded rotation experience.
During weekdays, you’ll be consulted for toxicology patients, attend weekly emergency medicine conferences, participate in weekly student education sessions and prepare a 10-minute presentation by the final week of the rotation.
The toxicology rotation lasts four weeks and is available year-round.

Emergency Medicine sub-internship
Our sub-internship in emergency medicine is a four-week rotation for fourth-year medical students considering a career in emergency medicine. The course includes clinical shifts in the emergency department as well as elective opportunities to participate in medic flights, EMS ride-alongs, nursing skills, emergency procedures and ultrasound scanning shifts.
You’ll gain experience managing patients in an emergency medicine setting, ranging from medical documentation to following through with medical decision-making and dispositions. You’ll be actively involved in the workflow of the ED, including patient care for trauma activations and stroke alerts.
Our rotation incorporates a didactic schedule to enhance the clinical portion of the program. This includes weekly dedicated medical student lectures, hands-on procedure labs, patient simulations, and weekly residency conferences. You’ll also attend a monthly journal club and an Ultrasound Day of lectures and hands-on scanning led by our ultrasound faculty and fellows.
The emergency medicine sub-internship lasts four weeks and is available year-round.

Emergency Medicine medical student procedure day
Held each spring and directed by Dr. Greg Boyer and Dr. Nicole Peters, this procedure day allows
2nd-4th year students to learn advanced procedures such as intubation and
airway management, central line placement, emergency ultrasound, suturing, and

Emergency Medicine wilderness medicine
Each Fall, we host a Wilderness Medicine and Survival Skills Conference.
Emergency Medicine summer externship program
Eligible Students:
Medical students between their first and second year of
medical school.
Student Benefits:
- Early exposure to emergency medicine via shadowing
physicians in a busy community academic center.
- Continue to develop history and physical examination skills
with the help of Emergency Medicine attendings and residents.
- Progressive responsibility with the ability to perform
independent patient evaluations and present directly to the senior
resident/attending.
- Participation in resident and medical student didactics.
These are in addition to a curriculum specifically designed for the externship.
- Learn and practice various procedures in our simulation
center (i.e. intubation, central lines, chest tubes, suturing, splinting,
ultrasound and running resuscitations.)
- Develop skills reading and interpreting evidence-based
medicine by attending our monthly Journal Club.
- Specific training in ECG interpretation and other clinical
skills.
- Development oral presentation skills.
- Free student housing available if needed and parking
provided.
Requirements:
- Successful completion of MS-1 year.
- Weekly clinical shadowing shifts and observed history and
physical exams.
- Attendance at Thursday medical student academic days.
- Attendance at scheduled medical simulation sessions.
- Completion of oral case presentation.
Externship Logistics:
Monday, June 2, 2025 to Friday, June 27, 2025
$1000 stipend provided to accepted students in addition to
free housing. All students must have a
vehicle, no exceptions.
